Pro Tools 101

Overview

Pro Tools 101 covers basic Pro Tools principles, giving you what you need to complete a Pro Tools project, from initial set up to final mixdown. The course has been dramatically reworked and updated for Pro Tools 7 software. Whether your project involves recording of live instruments, MIDI sequencing of software synthesizers, or audio looping, this course will give you the basic skills to succeed.

Topics include

 

    * Getting to know Pro Tools (Record, Edit, Mix, Process, and Deliver Audio)

    * Getting inside Pro Tools

    * Creating your first session

    * Making your first audio recording

    * Importing media and techniques, including setting levels

    * Making your first MIDI recording

    * Basic editing techniques

    * Introduction to mixing

    * Finishing your work

Prerequisites

Basic computer skills and some audio recording knowledge, such as a basic understanding of recording techniques, processes, and equipment.

Pro Tools 110

 

 

Overview

Pro Tools 110 provides a more detailed look at the Pro Tools system. This three-day course covers all the key concepts and skills needed to operate a Pro Tools system. The course provides the foundation for the later 200-series Pro Tools Music Production and Post Production courses.

 

Topics include

 

    * Getting started - Configuring your studio and session (Record, Edit, Mix, Process, and Deliver Audio)

    * Controlling Pro Tools - What is an external controller?

    * Managing sessions and tracks

    * Recording MIDI and audio

    * Loop recording and auditioning and techniques, including setting levels

    * Understanding timescales

    * Virtual instruments and plug-ins

    * Editing MIDI

    * Editing audio

    * Understanding automation

    * Mixing - Use of sends, returns, and plug-ins

Three days

 

Prerequisites

Basic computer skills, some audio recording knowledge, and some Pro Tools familiarity. Pro Tools 101: Introduction to Pro Tools is intended as a prerequisite for taking the 110 course. Passing the 101 exam is required before taking the 110 exam.

Pro Tools 201

Overview

Pro Tools 201 covers the core concepts and skills needed to operate a Digidesign Pro Tools|HD system in a professional studio environment.

    * Introducing Pro Tools|HD

    * Customizing Pro Tools to your session requirements

Prerequisites

Completion of the Pro Tools 101 and 110 courses. This course continues to build on the wide variety of fundamental concepts and topics covered in the Pro Tools 100-series courses. Access to the 201 exam requires passing all previous exams.

Overview

Through lectures, demonstrations and hands on application, students examine practical audio; harmonic structure and equalization, dynamics and dynamics processing, signal flow and console design/operation.

Through lectures, demonstrations and hands on application, students learn about microphone design, handling, and techniques. Reverb, delay and other effects are discussed and demonstrated. Students will break into group no greater than 2 to mix independently.

Students will record and mix a project. Starting with the recording of a band then proceeding to editing, overdubbing, mixing and mastering. We will also discuss the different roles in the studio as well as studio policies and practices
